A friend still runs hubzilla 3.01 and now wants to upgrade to the newest version. Which is the best way for that?
- Just update first to the latest 3.x version, or simply jump to 4.4? -- will all the databases be migrated?

This question interess me because I notice that we need to update every 2 or 3 month. That is a huge work. Is it possible to have kind of LTS version each year or 2 years like ubuntu.
Is it possible to upgrade from any version to the stable present version. (same question than above with my own word)

That's a good idea.
LTS fork is the good thing to do.
Now works around 30 hubs on third version in the Fediverse:
https://the-federation.info/hubzilla
From 3.2.1 to 3.8.9.
If repositories stores all of the commits of this period - theoretically - it is possible to recreate the correct update chain for these hubs.

Just go to 4.4. Don't try and split it up.
That is a huge work.
You can upgrade at any interval that is convenient for you. Once an hour, once a day, once a week, once a year, whatever.

It's not such a huge work.
That's not to say you won't have a problem. Roughly one in ten people has a problem upgrading and despite our best efforts this number has been fairly consistent for several years. If this concerns you, you should have a backup strategy or an admin that isn't afraid of code.

Remember to check all the database updates have been successfully implemented.

Thank you all for your help!
After reading your comments, my friend updated from 3.01 to 4.4:
-- it took the whole night to convert the 15GB hubzilla mysql database, but:
-- it worked, now the photos and the posts and the connections are all there.
Great work! :-)
Only some little problems persist:
-- There is no carddav app any more, and I don't know where it went, and have still to tryout if the carddav server part still works.

you could convert the DB to files at this stage, I'm not sure if DB storage of binary is good but I suspect it isn't.
See my post here for step by step, I just did this a few minutes ago.

Can also find some usage tips in the file

Thanks, I will check that out.
Meanwhile, I realized some other problem after updating hubzilla: I can't upload any photos any more :-(

Check your database update status. Perhaps some updates were not applied.

@Max_Kostikov:
I checked it under --> Administration --> "DB updates" and it tells me that there are no failed ones.
Is there any other way to check the status of the databases?
