Браконьерство с орангутангами осуществляется преднамеренно в соответствии с политикой, принятой корпорациями, производящими пальмовое масло. Они нанимают местных жителей в качестве борцов с вредителями, которые фактически уничтожают всех диких животных, в том числе гоминидов, которые портят масляные деревья на плантациях. Достаточно принести отрезанную руку убитого орангутана, чтобы получить за это деньги от корпорации. Когда они находят взрослую самку орангутана со своим ребенком, они обычно убивают мать и забирают ребенка для продажи.
Более 50 орангутанов погибают каждую неделю из-за уничтожения диких лесов ради плантаций. Дома-деревья расчищаются либо тяжелой техникой, либо пожаром. Орангутанги остаются голодными без источника пищи и часто оказываются в ловушке изолированных областей, вынужденно идут на плантации в поисках пищи.
Большинство компаний, занимающиеся выращиванием масличной пальмы, считают орангутана вредителем, поскольку они часто уничтожают молодые пальмовые растения в надежде найти пищу. Их сбивает экскаваторное оборудование, заливают бензином и сжигают заживо, захватывают, мучают, избивают, расстреливают из пневматического оружия, производители пальмового масло оплачивают эту практику.
Младенцы орангутанги, похищенные браконьерами, достаточно ценны на черном рынке, их часто содержат в качестве домашних животных. Единственный способ допустить то, чтобы мать для этого отпустила своего ребенка - это убить её.

They are run over by excavation equipment, doused in petrol and burnt alive, captured, tortured, beaten, shot with air guns or slaughtered. As forest home is destroyed they become vulnerable to poachers. Infant orangutans have monetary value and are often kept as pets or illegally smuggled, the only way a mother will let go of her infant is if she has been killed.
