It is not there by default no. I just have an account at jabber.de and use a client on the desktop

Looks interesting, but I think it does the same thing as Hubzilla's XMPP. it's a front end to XMPP. You would still need a server.

Might be true, but then again, I do not think a PHP 'server' would perform enough, depending on the number of users. I simply have a desktop client called Dino I use for my jabber account

I was thinking about the use case where someone running a public server (or a family or organizational server) wishes to also run a chat server. They would need two things: a XMPP server, and the Hubzilla XMPP client.

I haven't tried it, but I was told it was just a client.

That is the same, more or less, as using a third party server. Been using jabber.de for years now.

I do not see why I should have a frontend in Hubzilla. The only advantage would be to have a backup of the talks on that platform :-) The documentation about embedding it in Hubzilla with the existing addon is lacking to much for me to even try.

Besides that, I like to sometimes only use xmmp or only Hubzilla

One thing I would love to build is a communication suite, that includes your email, your social media, and your chat. It would also have cloud storage. Plus a built-in personal information manager (PIM) to help you organize it all. It would make conversations and relationships easier to manage, and your identity would be consistent in all communication types.

But this is something that would take me years to build... and some additional resources. I already started creating a PIM, and I could integrate that with Hubzilla. I would need an SMTP and an XMPP to fill it out.

First, I want to host my own data on my own servers. So I need more than client-side apps. Although, certain things like XMPP and SMTP will probably be clients. My servers already have email server software installed, so no need to duplicate functionality.

Second, my PIM is heavily focused on productivity and gamification. This means that it has a unique interface.

Third, it also has basic personal and business financing built-in and integrated with the project management features. For example, you can have tasks related to bills and spending, and it will calculate a budget and cash flow based on that. You don't have to enter the data twice, once as a reminder in your to-do list, and once in your accounting software.

Fourth, It will directly interface with other software. This is where caldav5 and APIs would come in handy.

I actually already built that part for my own use. Just add some optional fields to a task and pick the correct type (income, debt payment, spending/bills), and it's in the database as a financial task. Once it's in the database, there are all sorts of ways to display that information.

For example, you can use these financial tasks to predict the upcoming balance in a bank account, and it would be more accurate than a budget. If you have monthly payments, you can just make them repeat repeat monthly. Then you can reconcile those with the actual payment downloaded from your bank or entered manually.

You need to enter working BOSH server in addon's settings, it will be available web-client on your channel page.
