It is finished thanks to God's help. For a long time, long-established Germans were considered the 'norm,' while many other groups were often seen as expendable.
On one Sunday, I had the privilege of working together with my dear friend, who supported me actively in preparing our worship service, to create a very special service. This service was specifically designed for LGBTQ+ individuals, refugees, and everyone seeking a home in our community. It was an occasion to celebrate diversity, foster understanding, and provide a sense of security.
In today’s society, many people still face prejudice and discrimination, particularly concerning their identity and origin. For a long time, long-standing Germans have been viewed as the "norm," while many other groups have often been considered expendable. Our worship service was a conscious response to these injustices. We aimed to show that each and every one of us is valuable and worthy of protection, regardless of our background or identity.
The service began with a warm welcome, where I greeted the guests present and acknowledged their stories. It was very important to me to create an inviting atmosphere in which everyone could feel welcome—no matter who they are. I not only play with my words but also with my outward appearance. I place great importance on presenting myself in a well-groomed and appealing manner before donning the robe, which symbolizes respect and dignity for me. It concerns me that the community sees that we are all part of the same creation.
My friend and I created an atmosphere of celebration and respect. The music was a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary pieces that celebrated the diversity of life and love. We also allowed space for personal testimonies, where some attendees shared their experiences and challenges. These stories were touching and empowering, reminding us that each of us walks a personal and important path.
Additionally, we set up a small corner with informational materials for refugees and LGBTQ+ resources to raise awareness on these topics and offer practical help. It was important for us not only to speak words of comfort but also to provide concrete support and connection.
In the prayers and blessings, we spoke of the power of love and acceptance. We prayed for the strengthening of the weak, for the fearful, and for all those seeking a place in the world. Our service concluded with a communal song that spoke of hope and unity.
It was a moving moment as we all sang together, our hearts interconnected. In the spirit of community, I felt immensely happy and grateful that we could create this space of diversity. I hope that this service was a first step towards building bridges between different communities and advancing the healing process.
In gratitude for the support I experience and in hope for many more expressions of diversity, I look forward to the next service and to continuing to work for and with my community.
