The USA advertised this Kyoto protocol most of all and was its initiator, but as a result the USA declined ratification of it, because the US scientists demonstrated to public that there are no scientific justifications for this:

The next year, this treaty expires, the term of the Western artificial limitation of the industrial development of developing countries under the guise of "caring for nature" ends (i hope my example about farmaldehyde in Yasnaya Polyana clearly showed how the West takes care of its ecology). Rare earth elements are necessary for the functioning of renewable energy sources, for which this environmental campaign was started. Most of the resources needed for renewable energy are concentrated in Africa. United Chemical Company Shchekinoazot inaugurated an ammonia and methanol co-production plant on September 7, 2018, the third unit built at Shchekinoazot under license from Haldor Topsoe.

The new plant can produce 450 000 tpy of methanol and 135 000 tpy of ammonia and is based on Topsoe’s IMAP™ technology.

Perhaps Mr. Trump's trade war and sanctions and treaty-breaking will reduce the profitability of Shchekinoazot to some degree. Europe and the USA will need to build their own formaldehyde factories.

Apparently the Danish chemist found a process/catalyst to make this reaction go forward: 3 CH4 + 3 H2O + N2 → 3 CH3OH + 2 NH3, producing valuable fixed nitrogen (ammonia) from natural gas and air.

And of course, formaldehyde and formic acid would be likely byproducts along with CO2. Also, of course, the chemical plant will probably make derivative products like urea from the mix.

The good news is, formaldehyde has a very short environmental half-life, it oxidizes away in a few days when exposed to air. The bad news is that it is wickedly toxic and foul-smelling even in small concentrations.

"Scheckino-azot" means "Schekino-nitrogen". Before Kyoto Protocol this enterprise produced urea, it was famous "Schekino method" socialistic production:

That is an interesting bit of Soviet and Russian history.

Here in the USA, there is a similar geographic division. The states Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia make up the heart of the former Confederate States. The war was lost > 150 years ago, but there is still an unspoken (yet very palpable) contempt for the people of those states in the political centers of the East and West Coast. Mr. Trump was and is popular in those states.

In another interesting bit of industrial history, one of the largest employers of Columbus, Mississippi was the Severstal steel mill, which operated there from 2007 until 2014, when our foreign policy was taken over by the rabid dogs of Russophobia. Severstal divested of the mill, selling it to a US steel maker for $1.625 billion (according to Wikipedia).
